plane crash safety tips

While plane crashes are rare, it’s helpful to know safety tips to increase your chances of survival if one occurs. Here are some essential plane crash safety tips:

1. Choose Your Seat Wisely

  • Studies suggest seats in the rear of the plane may offer a higher chance of survival. Additionally, try to sit within five rows of an exit for a faster escape.

2. Pay Attention to the Safety Briefing

  • Even if you’ve flown before, listen carefully to the flight attendants' safety briefing and review the safety card in your seat pocket. Familiarize yourself with exit locations and any safety equipment.

3. Count the Rows to the Nearest Exit

  • Before takeoff, locate the nearest exits (both in front and behind you) and count the rows. This will help you find the exit even in low visibility or if smoke fills the cabin.

4. Wear Proper Clothing

  • Wear long pants, long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes (ideally sturdy, non-flammable materials) to protect your skin from burns and sharp objects in an emergency.

5. Use the Brace Position

  • In a crash, brace positions can minimize injury. If there’s a seat in front of you, place your head against it, clasping your arms around it. If there isn’t a seat in front of you, bend forward, placing your head between your knees with arms holding your shins.

6. Secure Your Seat Belt Tightly

  • Keep your seat belt fastened low and tight during the flight. Turbulence and unexpected events can occur suddenly, and a properly secured seat belt minimizes injuries.

7. Leave Belongings Behind

  • In the event of an evacuation, leave all carry-on items behind. Delays from grabbing personal items can significantly decrease your chances of survival and endanger others.

8. Stay Low and Cover Your Nose and Mouth

  • If there’s smoke, get low and move quickly to the exit, as smoke rises and can make it hard to breathe. Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth if possible to filter the smoke.

9. Know the 90-Second Rule

  • Experts say you have about 90 seconds to evacuate after a crash. Move quickly, stay calm, and don’t wait for instructions. Be assertive if others hesitate or block the way.

10. Listen to the Crew’s Instructions

  • In emergencies, follow instructions from the flight attendants, who are trained to handle crises. They can guide you through evacuation procedures and provide critical information.

11. Prepare Mentally for the Possibility

  • Mentally rehearse emergency scenarios and visualize what you would do if something goes wrong. This can help you react quickly and confidently in a high-stress situation.

12. Stay Calm and Focused

  • Panic can hinder your response and slow you down. Take deep breaths, focus on the exit, and move swiftly without hesitation. Try to help others only once you are safe.

13. Consider an Exit Row Seat if Physically Able

  • If you're comfortable with the added responsibility and meet the airline's requirements, sitting in an exit row can give you quicker access to an emergency exit.

Following these tips can enhance your ability to act quickly, stay safe, and increase your chances of survival in the rare event of a plane crash.
