lion animal information

Native to Africa and India, the lion (Panthera leo) is a huge cat belonging to the genus Panthera. It features round ears, a short, round head, a strong, broad-chested body, and a dark, hairy tuft at the tip of its tail. Lions are sexually dimorphic; adult males have a noticeable mane and are larger than females. Being a gregarious animal, it forms prides. A pride of lions is made up of cubs, related females, and a few adult males. Female lions typically hunt in groups and primarily target medium- and large-sized ungulates. Although some lions scavenge when opportunities arise and have been known to hunt humans, lions are apex and keystone predators that generally do not actively seek out and prey on humans.

The lion lives in savannahs, shrublands, and grasslands. When hunted, it adjusts to being active at night and twilight, although it is often more diurnal than other wild cats. The lion, which was widespread in Africa and Eurasia from Southeast Europe to India during the Neolithic era, is now only found in isolated groups in sub-Saharan Africa and one in western India. Due to a 43% decrease in population in African nations since the early 1990s, it has been classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 1996. Outside of specified protected areas, lion numbers are unsustainable. The main reasons for worry are habitat loss and human-wildlife interaction, even though the exact cause of the reduction is unknown.

The lion is one of the most well-known animal emblems in human culture, and it has appeared in many works of literature, movies, national flags, sculptures, and paintings. Since the Roman Empire, lions have been housed in menageries, and since the late 18th century, they have been a popular species to display in zoological parks worldwide. In addition to being common in Ancient Egypt, lions have been portrayed in almost every ancient and medieval civilization within the lion's historical and present range.
