On the 125th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Netaji Subash Chandra Bose, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appealed to the Centre to declare the day as National Holiday (PTI)
Subhas Chandra Bose was an Indian nationalist whose rebellious patriotism made him a hero. He was famously known as Netaji. Netaji was born on 23 January 1897 in Orissa, Bengal division. During his childhood days, he was admired by his principal due to his extreme brilliance. Bose was the one whose attempt during World War II to rid India of British rule with the help of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan left a troubled legacy.

In 1920, Bose cleared the Indian Civil Service examination in England. But, later he resigned from his civil service job on April 23, 1921 after hearing about India’s struggle for freedom. After this, he became the leader of the younger Indian National Congress in the late 1920s and 1930s. In 1939, he was debarred from Congress leadership positions, following differences with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi.
